Personal Blogging Tips

7:59 PM     BLOGGING, Tips     No comments

Personal blogs, like professional and business blogs, require some thought before you jump in and start throwing words on the screen if you don’t want your blog to be a flash-in-the-pan. While many bloggers are itching to start creating content (Hey isn’t that why you want to blog?), there are factors to consider first to ensure you don’t get blindsided once your information’s publically available. Here are twelve such factors.
  1. Host your own blog. While there’s a cost to this approach, it can help you in the event that your blog grows into something bigger. Understand that no matter how stable a blog hosting platform is now, it can disappear. A self-hosted blog (on your own URL) enables you to broaden your audience and gives you greater control. You own the content you create and have greater freedom to publish what you want.
  2. Anticipate and budget for technical support. Regardless of what you think when you start, there’ll be something you want to do requiring more technical experience than you have. Therefore, create a small budget for this purpose.
  3. Brand your blog. Before you tell me you’re not a company or organization, understand that if you don’t brand your blog that will be your brand. Determine blog formatting, color use, typefaces, media, voice and other elements to ensure they’re consistent.
  4. Set blog category structure. What major topics will your blog cover? Think in terms of the keywords your audience will use to search for your content. Stay away from cute titles don’t mean anything to robots.
  5. Plan for your blog’s future. Where do you see the content on your blog leading? Think 1 year, 2 years, 3 years out, while this may seem like the distant future, time passes quickly. This influences what you’re writing. Even if it’s only for one short term event such as your wedding, training for a marathon or dealing with a disease.
  6. Determine terms of use. How are you going to allow others to use your blog content? Many people assume anything that appears on the Internet can be freely reused. (In reality, this isn’t the case.) So it’s best to protect yourself and make your terms of use public.
  7. Watch your language. This isn’t restricted to four letter words but also encompasses your grammar and usage. It’s important because it reflects on your blog and brand.
  8. Take the mini-skirt approach to blog post length. Blog posts should be long enough to cover the topic but short enough to stay interesting. (Here’s the research on blog post length.)
  9. Don’t forget the blog eye candy. Think beyond text. Use photos, graphics, video, audio and presentations. These formats are often at the heart of personal blogs. Make sure you have permission to use photographs of people you know. This is particularly important when it comes to children.
  10. Publish consistently. Remember that a blog is a media entity. Before you remind me that it’s your personal thoughts, it’s important to think about your readers. To this end, mind your editorial calendar. Research has shown that it’s best to publish two to three times a week. If you don’t do this, at least be consistent in when you publish.
  11. Be selective in where you share your content. Don’t’ plaster your posts on every possible social media platform. Give thought to who’s on each platform and their interests. Consider where your topic makes sense.
  12. Determine how you want to handle comments. Do you want them closed, moderated or open? When you start getting comments is too late to get a policy out. (Need help? Here are blog comment guidelines.)
Remember blogs are a lot like children, once they come into being they have a life of their own you can’t necessarily plan. That said, you can ensure you make a good first impression and lay the foundation from which to grow and learn.

The 5 Best Places to Start a Blog

 10:08 AM     BLOGGING     No comments

Blogging. The thing your friend does that you could do better. The hobby of the century. Your key to boss-less freedom and your cat’s one shot at fame. So do your homework with this list and start a blog the whole world, and your mom, will love.

1.   WordPress.org

Stats:
·        Recommended for: Blogging and websites
·        Founded: May 27th, 2003
·        Founder: Matt Mullenweg of Automattic
·        Total users: 60 million, 19% of the internet and 1 in 5 websites as of December 2013
·        Total employees: 151
·        Pros: Elegance and ease
·        Cons: You need to get a domain name and web hosting first
·        Costs: Your domain name and hosting can be bought together for about $3-6 per month. I recommend HostGator for this, but other places are more than willing to charge you more
·        My verdict: The best place to blog if you’re serious about it. Good for all types of review websites, fashion blogs, single page websites, business websites, mommy blogs, company sites, eCommerce sites and more..

2.   WordPress.com

About:
WordPress.com is a free blog-hosting site with roughly half the features of .org. The general idea here is less maintenance for you, but less control of the blog. Get a .wordpress domain name like “ridanhblog.wordpress.com” or pay to use your own domain name. Need a niche? WordPress.com sees 100,000 posts published each day so you’ll surely find like-minded thinkers. Not a full company website but a loyal companion for one. Write posts, try a free theme, set up social media buttons and learn blogging at WordPress.com.

Stats:
·        Recommended for: Mass community blogging
·        Released: November 21, 2005
·        Founder: Matt Mullenweg of Automattic
·        Total users: 56 million blogs
·        Pros: Ease to use with little you can mess up.
·        Cons: Less customization and a bit fussy with adding certain features.
·        Costs: Free, you can pay WordPress.com to get a domain name without the “.wordpress” addition.
·        My verdict: A lovely intro to blogging that about 1 year in takes us all to a crossroads: stay put, or transfer to WordPress.org.

3.   Blogger

About:
Blogger is Google’s free blog-hosting site. More popular at the turn of the millenium, Blogger still offers a great service but the designs are a bit elementary. Login and publish your first post for free with only a Gmail account. Try Adsense “monetization”, design a new layout and even edit your first piece of code.

Stats:
·        Recommended for: Blogging
·        Founded: August 2013, 1999
·        Notable events: Bought by Google in February, 2003
·        Founder: Evan Williams of Pyra Labs
·        Total users:
·        Pros: Publish anywhere, huge community, images, video, edit HTML/CSS, template designer, track traffic stats in Blogger, Adsense at no charge
·        Cons: While Blogger is where many writers started publishing, it’s designs appear a bit childish today. Google owns your blog – they axed Reader – so acknowledge a bit less control upfront.
·        Costs: Pay $10/year for a domain name without the “.blogspot” extension – otherwise totally free.
·        Future predictions: May merge with Google+.
·        My verdict: Everything blogging should be and more – Blogger was the sandbox for names now headlining in tech. The only real negative comes from outgrowing Blogger, at which point many (like myself) transfer to WordPress. Less popular today – even Google’s PR Mogul Matt Cutts runs a WordPress site.

4.   Tumblr

Introduction to Tumblr:
At a time when WordPress and Blogger were neck-and-neck for new users, Tumblr showed up as the 3rd guy to the party. They received lots of sign-ups from users wanting a totally refreshing take on blogging, and have grown ever since. Tumblr was recently bought by Yahoo, who has interesting plans for the whole blog advertising thing.

Stats:
·        Founded: February 2007
·        Founder: David Karp
·        Total users: 152 million
·        Pros: Ease of use and ability to share your friends’ work through re-blogging.
·        Cons: Less customization, just a shade less professional and not ideal for conducting business.
·        Costs: Free, pay Tumblr to get your own domain name without the “.tumblr” addition
·        My verdict: Great for photography and other forms of art. Super-simplistic designs and a whimsical vibe make Tubmlr a great choice for any new blogger.

5.   Weebly

Stats:
·        Founded: 2006
·        Founder: David Rusenko
·        Total users: hosts 15 million websites
·        Pros: Drag and drop feature so easy a monkey could use it.
·        Cons: Less control for the user
·        Costs: ?

·        My verdict: I’ve heard a lot of positive reviews here. For a company owner who needs a website but despises tech, it’s Weebly or Squarespace, and both are sound choices.

How To Start a Blog - 7 Free Beginner's Guides

 4:37 PM     BLOGGING     No comments

Hi guys, welcome to my blog. Here I’d love to tell you about:

1 What is a Blog?
2 Why is blogging?
3 Where to start?
4 Some Mistakes are Often Made by Newbie Blogger
5 Start developing a blog
6 Make money from blog
7 Conclusion

Rid, please teach me blogging!

Rida, how to build a nice blog?

Rida, I want to start blogging, where to start it?

Rida, I wanna be a blogger, but I do not know what should I do?

The above are the questions I get most often through email, Facebook, SMS, WhatsApp, BBM, etc.

Honestly I'm a little bit confused when getting these questions, because to answer it's not enough with just one or two sentences, but it took a super guide complete from start to finish.

Well that’s the reason why I made this post. In this post I want to share some of my experience for being a blogger especially for my friend who may have the same question as above.

What I write below is the result of what I learned during over 1 year of blogging. Although arguably not very experienced, but there's no harm if I share what I have learned.

Without many words, read from the beginning to the end.

What is a Blog?

If you are a newbie, then the possibility is you still do not quite understand what blog is.

On the internet actually has many articles that discuss what is a blog, but here I will give only a trivial explanation.

Blogs are one of many types of websites available on the internet.

Here are the examples of types of websites on the internet:

News portal (eg detik.com, kompas.com, etc.)
Social Networking (eg facebook.com, twitter.com, etc.)
Search Engine (eg google.com, yahoo.com, etc.).
Forum (eg kaskus.co.id, ads.id,  etc.)
Online Store (for example: amazon.com, lazada.co.id, etc.)
BLOG (eg ridanadia.blogspot.com)
ETC.
So what's the difference between blog with other types of websites?

The answer is: THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENCES ...

One thing that most distinguishes between blogs with other type of website that is a function of the blog itself.

The main function of the blog in the beginning is to allow people to write personal notes on the internet.

But this time the blog already has a lot of functions. Starting off as a personal note, a place to share opinions and information, for political purposes, to for business purposes.

Why blogging?

Now maybe you wondered:

What can I get if I blogging?

Here are some benefits that you can get if being a blogger:

1. Being a great writer
Honestly, when I created Blog for the first time, I’m so confused where to start, what to write, For me to just write one sentence, it’s so hard.

But since being a blogger, Alhamdulillah with learning, day by day I began to write fluently. Although not exactly nice, but for me it’s not bad.

Well, if you are the type of people who have interest in writing, then I'm sure if  you start blogging then your writing skills will increase and it’s possible you’ll be a great writer.

2. Helping others
The benefits of blogging is not just for ourselves, with blog we can also help others with the knowledge that we have.

There’s no more fun in blogging except to help others.

3. Build trust in the internet
When we can help others through blogs then we will be given the trust by our readers for providing information that is useful to them.

Indeed, what is the importance of trust?

I am sure you know that the internet is growing around the world. Every single day Internet users continue to grow more and many people begin to expand their business in the online world.

One key to the success of online business is trust. Well, a blog is a great place to build that trust.

4. Build Network
Another benefit is that we can easily build a network through blogs. If our blog is consistently filled with useful articles in accordance with our skills, there will be many loyal readers who often visit our blog.

If we already have the trust and also an extensive network on the internet, it will be very easy to develop business on the internet.

5. Make Money
Of course that the blog can also become a source of income. How? I will explain in more detail below.

6. And much more ...

Where to start?

Started Blogging

Getting started blogging it was actually very easy, but most of people are puzzled by themselves.

1. Determine the purpose
Is the purpose of blogging important? Yes, It is. It’s very important. If we do not have a goal then it is definitely our blog will have no clear direction of purpose, and we also have been inconsistent in taking care of our blog.

Blogging takes time, energy, and mind. Don’t waste becausyour time with unclear purpose.

2. Determine the topic
Choose a topic which you’re really interested in. If you chose a topic that you did not like it, then your blog will not be long last.

3. Choose a blogging service
There are so many services that we can use for the blog, such as Blogger.com, WordPress.com, Tumblr.com, etc. Everything has its own advantages and disadvantages. But I think Blogger.com is the right choice for us. Besides free, blogger.com is very easy to use for beginners.

4. Start writing
If you already have a blog then the most important thing is to fill your blog with posts. Start writing whatever you want to write according to the topics you have specify already.

5. Beautify blog
It is actually not so important to be done by a newbie blogger.

You can change the template or the appearance of your blog with a better template design, install widgets to be more beautiful to look at, etc. But remember! Don’t too much. Because most beginner bloggers often changed their blog’s template which only waste of time.

Mistakes are often made novice blogger

Blogger Beginner Mistakes

After you know how to start blogging, then you should listen to some of common mistakes made by newbie blogger which you don’t need to do the same thing the following:

1. Too busy with appearance
As I mentioned above, the common mistakes made by newbie blogger are too busy to see the blog. Mutually templates, plug-detached widgets, etc.

Has a cool blog is good, but that will make your blog become big. Something which made your blog popular is not due to the appearance, but because of the content presented on your blog.

2. Concerned quantity than quality
Newbie blogger usually trying to fill the blog with the words as much as possible and hope quickly getting a lot of visitors regardless of whether the posting results of write themselves or other bloggers writing trace results.

3. Too much reading the information but less of practice
As a beginner blogger usually you have a very curiosity. Read many articles until your head is full of information and confused which one to do. A little bit of information but actually practiced is better than have many of the informations but it is not used.

4. Inconsistent
In the early days very diligently update the post on a daily basis, but after that suddenly disappeared don’t know where. Update the blog regularly is very good, but in my point of view consistency is more important.

5. Discussing too many topics
Is it a problem to discusses many topics? absolutely not. But definitely your blog will not have the identity, and it will be difficult to get loyal readers.

6. Too obsessed with statistics blog
A beginner blogger will usually be very diligent in checking the number of visitors, pagerank, etc. It will not help to increase the visitor of your blog but will only waste your time.

7. Made too many blogs
Honestly, enough for experienced bloggers that managing many blogs, tens and even hundreds. But for a beginner it is not advisable to make too many blogs because it would makes us not focus.

Although you’re not a beginner anymore, I think managing a lot of blogs is not a necessity. All depends on your purpose. If you want to create a blog to be popular, then there is no reason to manage many blogs.

8. Too ambitious to earn money fast
Inevitably many bloggers started blogging because they want to earn money. They assumed that to earn money from blogs can be done overnight, but it is not so. It takes time, effort and consistency.

9. Do not take advantage of the Google search engine maximumly
Instead of just a blog problem, many informations can be found easily on google. So use Google well to learn blogging.
